With more than 70,000 dead after a conflict between Tamil Tiger rebels and the Sri Lankan government that has lasted for nearly three decades, peace seems further away than ever. How does the media cover this ongoing conflict?

The civil war between the mainly Hindu Tamils and the Buddhist Sinhalese erupted in the 1980s with Tamils pressing for self-rule.

While the majority of the fighting took place in the north and east of the country, Tamil Tiger rebels carried out devastating suicide bombings in Colombo in the 1990s.

A ceasefire and a political agreement brokered by Norway in 2002 raised hopes for a peaceful solution, but with violence escalating in 2006 the conflict is once again turning into fully-fledged civil war.

Is the western media covering Sri Lanka properly or is the conflict now just another forgotten war? Just how difficult is it for local journalists in Sri Lanka to cover the story?

The Sri Lankan Civil War was a conflict fought on the island of Sri Lanka. Beginning on July 23, 1983, there was an on-and-off insurgency against the government by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (the LTTE, also known as the Tamil Tigers), a separatist militant organization which fought to create an independent Tamil state named Tamil Eelam in the north and the east of the island. After a 30-month-long military campaign, the Sri Lankan military defeated the Tamil Tigers in May 2009.

"Boycott Sri Lanka is very excited about its release of the video series," says group representative Anjali Manivannan. "This video series allows us to reach Americans who might otherwise be unaware of the repercussions of their consumer habits.

"Sri Lanka uses tax revenue from the textile industry to oppress Tamil civilians and detain them in IDP internment camps," explained Manivannan. "No Blood For Panties sends the powerful message that buying 'Made in Sri Lanka' items and supporting state-sponsored human rights violations is unsexy. It sends the message that being a conscious consumer is where true sexiness is."
"The story narrative of No Blood For Panties takes on the idea of how events in the far corners of the world impact our very personal lives," said Michael O'Rourke of Dimension7, who directed the series. "This video series turns the popular axiom of 'sex sells' on its head by using the same approach to actually promote activism." O'Rourke notes that Sri Lanka is one of the largest suppliers of sexy lingerie to major brands, including Victoria's Secret.
"Sri Lanka relies heavily on its textile exports to the U.S., United Kingdom, and India," Manivannan explained. "The taxes paid by textile manufacturers in Sri Lanka are used to fund government operations. Those taxes pay for the build-up of Sri Lankan armed forces even after the military conflict is over and support the systematic colonization of traditional Tamil lands.

"Due to Sri Lankan government-imposed media restrictions," Manivannan continued, "many Americans are unable to grasp the gravity of the Tamil people's plight in Sri Lanka.

"Boycott Sri Lanka urges every potential customer to pledge to boycott products made in Sri lanka. We made No Blood for Panties as an innovative tool to advance consumer conscience among the American public."
The light-hearted videos have a serious purpose, the producers noted. "Boycott Sri Lanka is a human rights group composed of American citizens and international members concerned about the crisis in Sri Lanka," Manivannan explained to reporters. "It was formed in 2009 to encourage Americans to promote a sustainable solution to Sri Lanka's conflict. Sri Lanka has experienced a brutal ethnic conflict between the Sinhalese-dominated government and the Tamil population, who have been discriminated against since Sri Lanka's independence. Over 125,000 lives have been lost in the conflict."

This Land Belongs to the Army is a 2014 documentary film by Maga.Tamizh Prabhagaran, a young journalist and film maker. This film exposes the genocidal war waged by the Sri Lankan Army and shows for the first time, the current uncensored reality in post war Sri Lanka. It also exposes the Sri Lankan government's policy of Sinhalisation and land occupation by the brutal Sri Lankan army.

The film also features new testimonies from Tamil genocide victims and an exclusive interview with a SriLankan Army personnel, who confesses to the indiscriminate use of chemical and heavy weapons against the Tamil population. The SriLankan government repeatedly claims that peace and freedom was brought to the Tamils after it's military conquest. However, it's army of occupation rules the North-East with an iron grip and prevents free media access. The film maker himself was illegally detained by the SriLankan State Forces under the charges of 'terrorism' for simply taking photograph. Despite these dangerous risks to his life, the film was made.
